UPDATED :: Thanks to those of you who were able to come to the meeting on January 27, it was lovely to connect and we had some great conversations.
During our meeting we sought to develop concrete and “deliverable” goals we want to achieve as a group, for the greater good of our entire community. We asked some hard questions in order to gain a deeper understanding of the institutional racism that has affected the MLK, Jr. community. The introduction of the Mandarin Immersion program reopened old wounds as well created new ones to Black, Brown, and other more recently gentrified/re-gentrified members of our community. Our action items include a push to let ALL parents know that their voice, based on their unique experiences are vital in order for us as a committee to “Breakdown Barriers of Exclusion and Build bridges of Equity that Empower our ENTIRE COMMUNITY (diversity implied) to GROW and THRIVE TOGETHER!”
We decided to continue to plan for a “Courageous Conversations” or a similar type of event. We also want to work on family/parent engagement strategies to further equity and inclusion. In an effort to learn how we can best advocate for and support one another, we intend to have a committee presence at more school events, and possibly at drop-off and pick up times as well. We are considering interactive surveys, dot surveys, post-it note feedback, and one question interviews at vehicles to gather more information. Additionally, we’ll work on our committee mission statement (highlighted text above is a good start) and possibly create inspirational team swag like stretchy bracelets or something similar.
Monday, Feb 6, 9 a.m. @ MLK, Jr. School: Meeting with PPS district staff to continue discussion about Courageous Conversations dialogue series. (If you’d like to come to this meeting and haven’t been to prior ones, please contact Megan for more context and background. )
Tuesday, Feb 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Family Safety & Wellness Fair @ MLK, Jr. School: We’ll staff a table for our committee to begin some family engagement work. Our plan is to have an interactive one or two question survey with either post-its or dot surveys. Let Shei’meka or Megan know if you can volunteer to help staff our table.
NEW DATE Friday, Feb 17, 6-8 p.m., Committee Meeting, Location MLK, Jr. School: We’ll talk next steps with both Courageous Conversations and family engagement strategies.
